SSDs have been around for a while, often immortalised as the end state of storage...a dream for a majority of pc users the world over. Not too long ago i bought three 7200 rpm seagate momentus 7200.4 drives with 16mb buffer as an upgrade to my macbook pro 17 unibody, my macblack and my recent hp pavilion dm1 - 1016TU ultra mobile pc ("UMPC").
A few days ago a friend posted up on facebook how his new ssd blew the performance of his hdd 7200rpm out of the water. I was intrigued by not just the performance aspects but also because i thought maybe they had come mainstream products. I contacted him and frantically got the details on the device it was an Intel 2nd Generation SSD drive x-25.
SSDs are not cheap especailly on a per gigabyte basis. Anyway it took me a bit of time to source the intel drive. In the end i managed to get the 160gb drive from chamoxa for sgd 730.I eagerly brought it back and cloned the drive from on my Hp Pavilion DM 1 1016TU and all i can say is that on bootup the performance blew my socks off.
Apart from bootup and shutdown performance of applications just rocketed.
