My personal LP collection goes back to the early 90's so I have some classics such as Guns N Roses, Boys to Men, PM Dawn, Sting, Billy Joel, Pink Floyd, Sting, Huey Lewis & The News, Robert Palmer etc... yes its been an absolute pleasure to revisit these after so many years.
While most turntable enthusiasts talk about the warmthness in the audio quality which is derived from vinyl (which i don't dispute), my sense of satisfaction comes more from the fact that on vinyl i tend to actually listen to the entire record - end to end on both sides. This is think has to be due to the fact that on the manual turntables its such a hassle to cue up the track, but more importantly the fact that you have to flip the LP to listen to the other side...is a bit of a mini break for your ears..so in essence you are only listening to about 25 mins at each time. Which is nice and comfortable. On a related point since we listen to the entire record there is a sense of buildup in the album... the momentum which the artiste wanted to create is fully achieved and realised. This is obviously achievable on CD as well.
For those of you who are planning to get into Vinyl I should suggest that its never too late to get into it. If you have an existing hi-fi set which has an amplifier with a phono stage/setting then all you need to do is to get hold of a turntable. You do not have to go out a brand new one (although thats more of what I would probably do), there are enough second hand turntables available at most specialist record stores. Grab a couple of LPs a good stylus cartridge not costing more that US$60 should be sufficient to get you going. Also remember to get a couple of you favourite albums on vinyl to enjoy this audio experience.
I would love to hear what musical setups you have at home and what your favorite records are. Drop me a note soon. As for right now I am listening to some Boys II Men... motownphilly!
